British author in “new weird” genre to deliver Richard W. Gunn Memorial Lecture

A British author who writes in a genre that has been dubbed “the new weird” is set to deliver the Richard W. Gunn Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

China Miéville is scheduled to speak on “Cognition as Ideology: A Dialectic of Science-Fiction Theory.” His writings, including the novel “Perdido Street Station,” have combined urban fantasy with science fiction.

He has been a candidate for the British House of Commons and has published “Between Equal Rights,” a book on Marxism and international law.

The lecture is presented by KU’s English department and endowed by Richard W. Gunn, brother of James Gunn, emeritus professor of English and director of the J. Wayne and Elsie M. Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction.
