One person flown to hospital after car/bicycle accident

A 33-year old Kansas University graduate student was in fair condition early Wednesday night, after his bike collided with a KU maintenance truck shortly after 4 p.m. near Templin Hall, authorities said.

Trevor J. Manthey, a graduate student in social welfare, was taken by helicopter to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka, said Capt. Schuyler Bailey of the KU Public Safety Office.

“He was talking to the paramedics,” Bailey said. “That’s always a good sign.”

When the accident occurred, Manthey had been riding his bike in a crosswalk that crosses Engel Road, between Templin and Nunemaker halls atop Daisy Hill, Bailey said. The maintenance truck had been heading south on Engel.

“It’s early in the investigation,” Bailey said. “We believe the bicycle struck the side of the truck.”
