Former Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway received Lawrence Bank’s Star of Excellence Award in August. The award is presented to a community member who has made outstanding contributions to the Lawrence community.

After stepping down as chancellor, Hemenway has kept busy with various public speaking appearances, his new book, new home, new office and new responsibilities.

On Oct. 1, he traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., to be a guest speaker at The Big Read, an event in honor of author Zora Neale Hurston.

Hemenway’s biography on Hurston has been in circulation for more than 30 years, and he’s currently in the research phase on a new book about American values and intercollegiate athletics.

And will we ever discover the generous endowment donor who is subsidizing the former chancellor's pay?

Jack-- well, it's still better than the medals Brezhnev was constantly awarding himself. Anyway, perhaps down the line they'll rename the "Star of Excellence" to the "Order of Compton."

Let's see, the bank that Compton owns gives a made up award to the chancellor who made athletics more important than academics at ku, just like Compton wants so is this some how worthy? In other words who cares. Bladerunner's award is just as newsworthy and truly closer to what was deserved.

Did Budig receive one of these or does it only go to the incompetent politicians?

Another award devalued. Who's next, Lew Perkins?
