Taylor might scrimmage at Late Night

Jayhawk’s thumb healing; guard should have no problem with skits

Kansas guard Tyshawn Taylor passes out to the wing as he is guarded by Baylor forward Quincy Acy during the first half Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at the Ferrell Center in Waco.

Injured Kansas University sophomore basketball guard Tyshawn Taylor, who will participate in the skits at Friday’s Late Night in the Phog, also may play in the Jayhawks’ intrasquad scrimmage.

“We don’t know yet if he’ll be released for full contact. He’ll be in warmups. If he has to miss any time, it should be just a couple days (of practice),” KU coach Bill Self said Tuesday.

Taylor dislocated his left thumb on Sept. 22. The thumb has responded well to treatment.

“He does everything with the guys now, just not full contact,” Self said.

Self hopes Allen Fieldhouse, as usual, will be full for the 25th-annual Late Night. Thousands of KU students will be out of town as part of fall break.

“It’ll be a fun night, a big night. It’s always a big night at Kansas,” Self said. “It’s the 25th anniversary Late Night. Hopefully it’ll be the best we’ve ever had. I would think a lot of people would like to see our new facility as we unveil that,” he added of a renovated fieldhouse.

Improvements include wider concourses, new bathroom fixtures, reorganized concessions stands, expanded locker rooms and Booth Family Hall of Athletics, as well as an alumni lounge. There’s also a new double-deck bridge built between the fieldhouse and parking garage on the north side of the building.

“The guys are ready to get started. We’ve given them the week to get their legs under them after Boot Camp like we do every year. I know the guys are really looking forward to what should be a great Late Night,” Self stated.

Late Night is slated to run from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. Friday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Fans are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item, which will be donated to area food pantries.

Miles cut

Former KU point guard Aaron Miles on Tuesday was released by the Atlanta Hawks. Miles, who played in Greece last season, Spain in 2007-08 and France in ’06-07, scored seven points in his only preseason game for the Hawks.
