— A former Kansas University guard who has NBA time on his resume is the first player in the Maine Red Claws basketball franchise's history.

The new NBA development team in Portland announced Thursday that 6-foot-5 Billy Thomas will wear No. 12 for the team this season. The Red Claws acquired rights to Thomas in the third round of their NBA D-league Expansion Draft in September.

The Red Claws say the 33-year-old Thomas brings a strong outside shooting threat to the team. Once the school record holder for 3-point field goals at Kansas, Thomas has played for teams around the world, including 53 NBA games.

I hope he has good investments or job prospect because his career is on the downside. I don't wish him ill, just pointing out the reality. NBA teams normally don't want to sign players at that age unless they can get them cheap.

Here is an nice sidenote on Billy Thomas. About 3 years ago I got a cellphone from Verizon. I immediately got 3-5 calls/texts per day asking for "BT" or Billy, sometimes from Eurpoe. After getting congratulatory calls/texts one day for being picked up by the Cleveland Caveliers, I did some homework are discovered BT was Billy Thomas. Thankfully the calls have slowed, but I'll still get a call/text every now and then for Billy.
