Precinct committee members to select replacement for County Commissioner Charles Jones

Precinct committee members of the Douglas County Democratic party will meet April 4 to select a replacement for County Commissioner Charles Jones, who recently resigned.

Ed Quick, the party’s chairman, said the public meeting, or convention, will be 10 a.m. April 4 at the Lawrence Public Library’s auditorium, 707 Vt.

The committee members who are eligible to vote live in the 1st commission district, entirely within the city. About 22 precinct committee members live in the district, Quick said, and they will receive letters notifying them of the meeting in coming days.

Members will take nominations, and after the nominees give a short speech, electors will vote by secret ballot. A candidate needs a majority to win the seat.

Jones, a commissioner for 10 years, filed his official notice to resign last week, and the committee has 21 days to elect a successor. Jones said he wanted to concentrate more on his increasing responsibilities as director of the Kansas University Public Management Center.
