The Topeka Capital-Journal and WIBW radio are cutting employee salaries 5 percent to 10 percent.
Both news agencies are owned by Morris Communications, which hired bankruptcy attorneys earlier this year.
A spokesman for the Capital-Journal told Topeka’s KTKA-TV last week that it was business as usual at the newspaper.
Kurt Caywood, C-J director of audience development, said Thursday that employees are disappointed but are rallying around the fact that no one was laid off.
He said he knows of no other plans to cut costs.

Having been through three company closures all I can say is:
Pack your stuff, this is the beginning of the end.
It usually starts with wage concessions, then reduction in benefits, hours cut, layoffs then the phone call at home,"Don't come in tomorrow, we are closed"
Employees, while you are rallying you should also update your resume.

It's obvious: print is dead. Any media company committed to saving print is putting themselves at risk.
Which is too bad. I'm not an avid reader, but paper is much warmer in the hand than a computer. It's just not the same (for us who grew up with it).

How is this news? Do we live in Topeka?
Oh wait... LJW is owned by the World Company, World Company owns Free State Communications and they own a TV station in the Topeka market... therefore, LJW must report this "news" about reporters in Topeka to highlight the fact that they didn't cut any wages. Probably because they don't get paid much already.

Economic trends in close geographic proximity might be of interest to people. After all, some of our friends, family, and neighbors work in Topeka.
Or it could be as you suggest: a convoluted effort by the LJW to make themselves look good.

This is news. Not everything is a conspiracy or loaded with agenda.

I'm sure it's news to people, yes, but it has an obvious agenda behind it.
