Probation given in shooting case

A Douglas County judge has ordered two years of intensive probation for Samantha Schumock, 19, Lawrence, in connection with an incident in which gunshots were fired in an east Lawrence neighborhood.

“That’s a long time to be on probation,” Judge Sally Pokorny told Schumock. “That’s many, many opportunities for problems.”

Schumock entered a no-contest plea in May to a charge of aggravated assault and two counts of battery. She was involved in an incident in which shots were fired early March 17 near 13th and New Jersey streets. Two other suspects also face charges in connection with the incident. Andrew Hiegsberger pleaded no contest to a charge of attempted criminal threat and is awaiting sentencing. William Hiegsberger is expected to stand trial July 21.
