Suspect in weekend incident at Cross Town Tavern released from custody
?A man arrested after several gunshots were fired Saturday outside a Lawrence bar was released from Douglas County Jail, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was arrested on charges of felony possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance without a tax stamp.
Assistant District Attorney David Melton said the man was later released, because Lawrence police hadn’t completed their investigation into the case. No charges have been filed in court.
Shortly after midnight Saturday, witnesses near Cross Town Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave., reported hearing one to 10 shots, police said. Officers said at least one vehicle was struck by a bullet and a bullet narrowly missed a 50-year-old woman.
Shortly after the incident, security guards at a residential complex near 16th Street and Haskell Avenue saw a vehicle that matched the description of one involved in the incident. The suspect was inside the car.
Lawrence police said they’re investigating whether the gunfire report is connected with a shots fired the same morning, in the 1800 block of Haskell Avenue, or one Sunday morning at Econolodge, 2222 W. Sixth St.
Since last summer, when a man was shot at a large party in the parking lot of Cross Town Tavern, there have been multiple reports of gunfire outside the bar.
