Wichita man pleads guilty to kidnapping and robbing Lawrence woman

A Wichita man on Tuesday pleaded guilty to kidnapping a woman and robbing her at knifepoint in the parking lot of a Lawrence department store, Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s office said.

Donald Bartsma, 42, was arrested after the Feb. 13, 2008, incident, which occurred in the parking lot of Kohl’s, 3240 Iowa.

The 24-year-old victim was getting into her car, when Bartsma forced his way in, covered her mouth, held a pocket knife up to her, threatened her not to yell, drove her to a nearby bank and forced her to withdraw $100 from her account, prosecutors said.

He was then accused of driving the victim to a rural area of Douglas County, where he fled in a stolen escape vehicle that was driven by an accomplice.

“The victim in this case was very fortunate to have not been hurt, and I am relieved Bartsma is no longer a threat to our community,” Branson said in a news release.

Bartsma faces between 31 months and nearly 32 years in prison for the two felony charges. He’s scheduled to be sentenced at 11 a.m. Sept. 1.

He is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in Missouri for trying to rob a woman in a Kansas City, Mo., shopping center parking lot, just hours after the Lawrence incident.

Troy Pryor, Bartsma’s accomplice, is serving 49 months in a Kansas prison, after pleading guilty to robbery in the Lawrence case, prosecutors said. He is also serving time in Missouri.
