Jury selection under way in case of man accused of severely injuring ex-girlfriend
Jury selection began at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday — 24 hours later than scheduled — in the trial of a former Kansas University student accused of severely injuring his ex-girlfriend during an October 2007 attack.
A day after a problem with the jury questionnaires caused a delay, attorneys began questioning potential jurors in the case of Matthew Jaeger.
Prosecutors have charged Jaeger with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and making a criminal threat. Attorneys will try to whittle down a pool of 100 people to select 12 jury members and alternate jurors.
The charges stem from an incident on Oct. 9, 2007. According to the victim’s testimony during a preliminary hearing in February 2008, Jaeger broke into her apartment in the 1200 block of George Court and became enraged after finding her with another man.
The victim said Jaeger, who’s trained in jiu-jitsu, choked her until she became unconscious. She suffered severe injuries to her vagina and pelvic region and had to spend nearly two weeks in the hospital. Police officers later pulled over a car near Sixth and Florida streets that had Jaeger and the woman in it, and they arrested Jaeger.
Defense attorneys have previously argued that Jaeger found the woman in that condition and was simply trying to get her help when officers pulled the vehicle over.
