KU baseball player answers to charges related to incident outside Lawrence bar

A Kansas University baseball player has been granted a diversion for an incident outside a Lawrence bar, a city prosecutor said Friday.

Buck Afenir, a senior, was arrested Sept. 18 and charged in Lawrence Municipal Court with criminal damage to property and interfering with the duties of a law enforcement officer.

Lawrence Police said they were called around bar closing time to The Hawk, 1340 Ohio, after a witness reported that Afenir damaged a parked vehicle and walked away.

When officers tried to contact Afenir, he ran, police said. They eventually found him hiding under a bush.

The baseball catcher, whose full name is Matthew Tye Afenir, will be required to pay a $300 fee and placed on probation for one year, said Tom Porter, city prosecutor.

If he successfully complies with the court-ordered conditions, the charges may be dropped.
