Police arrest two suspects in Burger King drive-thru robbery

Officers have arrested two men suspected in the robbery of four Kansas University students at a Lawrence Burger King.

The suspects are from Bonner Springs and Kansas City, Kan.

The armed robbery occurred at 2:15 a.m. Sunday as the victims were waiting for food in the drive-through lane of the restaurant, Sixth and Missouri streets. The victims included three Sigma Chi fraternity brothers and a female.

“These types of crimes truly are quality-of-life issues for the citizens of Lawrence,” said Sgt. Bill Cory, Lawrence police spokesman. “Nobody wants to be a victim of a robbery when you’re trying to get food in a drive-through.”

Mike Wise, one of the victims, said a man approached the car, asked if he could get inside and demanded cash at gunpoint. The robber then returned to the passenger’s side of an older model red car that was in line behind them, and the car sped off.

The victims followed the suspect’s car from a distance until they saw it turn north on Massachusetts Street and cross the bridge into North Lawrence.

Antoine Barber, whom police have identified as the driver of the suspect car, was charged Thursday with four counts of aggravated robbery in Douglas County District Court, prosecutors said.

Jail records indicate the 21-year-old suspect was arrested Wednesday in his hometown of Bonner Springs. Barber is being held in jail on $45,000 bond and was ordered to return to court at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Late Wednesday, Kansas City, Kan., police arrested the suspect accused of approaching the victims’ car, Cory said. The 20-year-old suspect was transported to Douglas County on Thursday and hasn’t yet been formally charged in court.
