Accident update

Lawrence police have identified the Kansas University student who was hit by a car on Wednesday afternoon as Zachary Kastens, 21.

Kastens, of Herndon, was hit while crossing the street near the intersection of Crestline Drive and University Drive. The KU junior theater and film major was taken by helicopter ambulance to a Kansas City-area hospital with head injuries.

A police spokeswoman said Thursday that the man’s injuries were not life-threatening. Kastens was conscious and talking when the helicopter arrived, police said.

Officers identified the driver of the car as Kendra Butler, 18, a Washburn University freshman, of Topeka.

Information regarding the cause of the accident, as well as whether any citations were issued, were not available from police on Thursday.

Law enforcement report

A 44-year-old Lawrence man was arrested on accusations of battery Thursday afternoon. Police arrested him in the 2000 block of Louisiana Street. Bond was set at $500.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical reported no fire calls Thursday.
