KU fraternity preparing to celebrate opening of expansion

Kansas University’s Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 7 for the fraternity’s new building addition, 1645 Tenn.

The ceremony, which will begin at 12:15 p.m., will unveil the $1.7 million expansion and renovation, which includes a new technology center, a TV/media room, a library and a new front facade.

An important addition is the expansion of existing two-man member rooms, said Adam Price, a junior in finance and sports management who is the chapter president.

“We wanted to give the guys more room,” Price said. “The facilities haven’t been the best, and we really wanted to compare to other houses on campus.”

KU’s chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon began in 1923, with James Naismith as a founding member. The fraternity has been at its current location since 1949.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Provost Richard Lariviere and Lawrence Mayor Mike Dever are expected to attend the ceremony.
