Firefighters: Unattended cooking caused apartment blaze on Tennessee Street

Trees are covered in ice around the house at the southeast corner of 17th and Tennessee that was destroyed in a fire Monday night.
Unattended cooking led to a Monday evening apartment fire at 17th and Tennessee streets, Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said Tuesday.
She said the accidental fire, which broke out at 9:50 p.m. Monday, destroyed the home, which had been converted into apartments. The blaze caused $163,650 in damage.
The fire displaced seven residents — four of whom were Kansas University students — from the three apartment units at the house, 1700 Tenn.
Multiple emergency crews were called to the blaze at the two-story building, located at the southeast corner of the intersection.
All the house’s occupants were accounted for, and no firefighters were injured.
Jane Blocher, executive director of the county’s chapter of the American Red Cross, said the agency provided hotel lodging and vouchers for food and clothing to three residents of the building. Three other residents, who were KU students, received assistance for food and clothing, but they declined lodging assistance because they were able to stay with friends, Blocher said.
KU’s Office of Vice Provost for Student Success also provided assistance to the students to make sure they had housing and the supplies they need throughout finals this week, KU spokeswoman Jill Jess said.
The structure was declared a total loss. According to Douglas County records, the property is appraised at $145,550, and Carl and Mary Maurer own it.
