— Lawrence High dug a first-quarter hole and couldn’t climb out in a 54-44 boys basketball loss to Ponca City, Okla., on Saturday in the Blue Valley Shootout.

The Lions fell behind, 16-8, in the opening period.

“We played an average first half,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said, “but we had a good second half. The shots were falling a little bit more for us, and we shared the ball a little bit more.”

K.J. Pritchard led the Lions with 20 points, and Anthony Buffalomeat added 12 points.

“K.J. did a nice job in the second half,” Lewis said. “We just sputtered a little bit in the first half and couldn’t quite bounce back.”

Jake Johnson had eight rebounds to help the Lions outrebound Ponca City, 26-25.

The Lions (0-4) will travel to Shawnee Mission Northwest on Friday.
