The Kansas football team released an updated depth chart Saturday, one week before the season-opener against Northern Colorado.

Offensively, junior Brad Thorson ascended to the starting left guard spot and true freshman running back Toben Opurum and sophomore Rell Lewis are listed as co-No. 2 running backs behind starter Jake Sharp. Opurum, one of the gems of the Jayhawks’ 2009 recruiting class, picked Kansas over Notre Dame and Florida and spent at least part of last Wednesday’s open practice working with the first-team offense.

Red-shirt freshman quarterback Kale Pick, meanwhile, has been named the team’s No. 2 quarterback, although KU coach Mark Mangino has said that, as a precautionary measure, receiver/backup quarterback Kerry Meier will continue to work at quarterback on a limited basis.

Defensively, Mangino has juniors Justin Springer and Drew Dudley and senior Arist Wright listed as the starting linebackers. Angus Quigley, who made the switch from running back late last season, was listed as the starter at strongside linebacker earlier this summer but has fallen off the two-deep depth chart completely.

In addition, junior receiver Dezmon Briscoe is listed as the team’s starting kick returner after returning kicks for 219 yards and a 27.4-yard average last season — and sophomore Daymond Patterson is currently penciled in to handle punt return duties. Last season, Patterson averaged 11 yards per return and recorded an opening-week touchdown against Florida International.
