Douglas County commissioners award bids to repair two bridges

Douglas County commissioners have awarded bids to repair two bridges over southwestern Clinton Lake and for other work on roads south of Lawrence.

Commissioners on Monday morning approved a $424,512 bid from Topeka-based Wildcat Construction to replace expansion joints and make other repairs on the bridges over the Wakarusa River arm and Rock Creek arm on the southwestern side of Clinton Lake.

The engineer’s estimate for construction on the project was $550,000. County officials said work should begin no later than Aug. 31.

Also, commissioners Nancy Thellman and Mike Gaughan approved a $608,767 bid from Lawrence-based R.D. Johnson Excavating to perform asphalt work and to pave shoulders on County Road 458 east of U.S. Highway 59 to County Road 1055 and later this month to repave 1055 road from 548 road north to 31st Street.

The engineer’s estimate for the projects was $782,000. Commissioner Jim Flory was absent from the meeting.
