A 19-year-old Topeka man was arrested early Sunday after a chase on foot ended with a taser being used in the 3000 block of Sixth Street.

Lawrence police pulled the young man's vehicle over Sunday morning for a drug investigation. Police had the suspect sitting on the curb while they searched the vehicle. Police said the suspect then got up and took off running from the area about 1:13 a.m., discarding a bag of drugs as he fled.

Police chased the man on foot down Sixth Street, toward Dillons, where the suspect attempted to jump a fence. He was tazed by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper and taken into custody.

The suspect was arrested on charges of driving without a license, obstructing legal procedure, and numerous drug violations including possession, intent to distribute and not possessing a tax stamp. The man was booked at 1:14 a.m.

In Topeka they tase people to the death. A female deputy tased a Goodyear employee having a heart attack three times. He finally died when they threw him face down on the ground, stuck a knee in his back and handcuffed him. Off-duty police decide the neighbors' party is too loud and walk into the yard and shoot them. They broke a kid's jaw on the pavement because he didn't pull over fast enough when caught speeding. It is probably safer for would-be criminals to drive down here to committ their crimes. Our law enforcement is going to have to get meaner than Topeka's.

After reading RoeDapple's original post then perusing the subsequent coversation, I'd have to agree that his post covered it all, and in much more entertaining and brief fashion.

Sorry...the rest of you wasted your time.

...Jackpot, I thought that was actually pretty amazing too. Either they now have a mobil booking station, or the KHP & LPD really hauled butt, if ya figure it took at the very least 30-40 seconds to chase the guy down...and as for tazing him? He and many others ought to be waaay glad the law enforcement officer didn't reach for the OTHER holster...tazers are one of the best, most effective NON-lethal law enforcement tools to come along in many a year. Imo, anyway. However, they don't seem to do diddly on th' crankster-gangsters...I've "heard of" THOSE guys just keepin' on keepin' on, even when more than one tazer is deployed...now THAT can get...amusing.

If you look at the booking recap it looks like he had more than just marijuana on him.

Topeka........ it's always Topeka when there are weapons, drugs, or physical altercations involved. I really wonder about Topeka and the hooligans that keep flooding towards Lawrence.

Fleeing & Eluding needs to have mandatory jail time. It's all about incentives and disincentives. If you run from the cops, you're basically endangering everyone. To me it's way worse than a low-level DUI, but doesn't really carry the hard time.

Everyone talks about increasing border security. We need to increase our cities security on the Shawnee/Douglas County lines.

Where do I purchase drug tax stamps? The only location you can purchase drug tax stamp(s) at is the following location:

Topeka Assistance Center Docking State Office Building 1st Floor, Room 150 915 Harrison Topeka, KS 66612-1588 Phone: 785-368-8222 Or 788-526-7738 (Toll Free)

The tax is $200 per gram of controlled substance! The tax on marijuana is much more reasonable.

Everyone of the legalize weed people say make it legal so you could tax it. They already do and they complain about taxing it. You just want it legalized... so quit trying to say you would be willing to let it be taxed as a concession

Legal drugs are a problem too...

"Why can't we all, just be honest, Admit to ourselves that everyone's at it? From grown politicians to young adolescence, Prescribing themselves antidepressants

But how can we start to tackle the problem, If you don't put your hands up and admit that your on them The kids are all in danger, they're all getting habits 'cause from what I can see everyone's at it.

"Those of you who wink at drugs are welcoming violence into your otherwise peaceful neighborhoods"

Drugs cause violence! Guns kill people! Cars smash other cars! And in the happy little community, no one ever has to accept responsibility. Blame it on the booze, blame it on the drugs.

Another Topeka thug, 1:13 Sunday morning, drugs, no license, resisting arrest, etc. etc. etc The Saturday & Sunday papers every week are becoming sadly identical. When will the city commissioners wake up and order the prosecutor to push for the maximum penalties. Instead it's about a plea deal that generates additional income for the city while leaving the jail as empty as possible because a full jail means cash flow crisis. Good thing our city leaders have their priorities in line, huh?

"All illegal drug users are losers and should put behind bars for life."

Great philosophy. Let's find every kid toking a joint and put him in prison for life. The answer to all of society's ills is more people in prison.

You do know that when you close your eyes, your problems don't just disappear, right?

Oh yeah mommy, I forgot about the Econo. Could be there too.

0

mommyoffour 4 years, 8 months ago

He was probably leaving the Econo Lodge. That hotel has not learned any lesson with all the other shooting, guns, drugs, fights that have been going on there. They rent the place out for private parties. Last night the scanner was going crazy with calls from that place.

OldEnuf2be,

Nice post.

Curious question. Given the time and location of this incident, was this individual leaving the Moon/821 bar when he was pulled over or possibly meeting someone there? Just curious.

BorderRat- You can acquire a tax stamp down at the court house/police station. Just as easy as getting a bicycle license/stamp/id tag.

If the guy is feeling healthy enough to run from the cops then he is healthy enough to be tazed.

How does one go about getting the tax stamp? I think it would be a great novelty item to frame above my patio bar.

oh! you mean he really was from Topeka?

can we institute a special tax on scofflaws arrested in our fair city who come from Topeka? a really high tax.

you know, if you want to decrease the incidence of something: tax it.

once again the liberal, democrat, antibusiness environment of lawrence is highlighted.

again, the powers that be have shut down a small businessman just trying to sell to a market here.

no zebra coat. It is safely hanging out in my closet.

the suspect fled after voluntarily pulling over: taze deserved.

good job lpd & hp.

I can't believe this guy is from topeka...so here's the question:

was he buying here and transporting back to t-town?

or was he bringing in topeka's best exports?

OldEnuf - I hate to tell you, but you are waaaayyyy behind times. Those gangs have been fighting each other in Lawrence for years now. Now, it is increasing and also reported better, but the problem you pointed out has been around for a long time. Plus, you are correct in that it is wider spread. Although, I take exception to your choice of bar names. Those two have always had violence associated with them. Especially the Crosstown (or any of it's former names). This is not new to them.

I used to think Lawrence was a really safe place to raise kids but when the students come back, drug activity increases. Raising a teenager here can be very tricky. They can blend in with the college students.

Time to move?'

if i was to assume something , i'd say this guy was not a college student anyway...but if you'd feel safer moving....go on then.

It's just a matter of time before Topeka gangs start shooting it out with each other in OUR city. These guys are coming here because they see Lawrence as an emerging market. In Topeka, they have a lot of competition with other gangs, so they come over here for the easy sales. Once all the sellers realize that Lawrence is the place to "expand", their competitive marketing will turn violent in our streets. We have more and more gunplay in our streets. A guy starts shooting over by The Wheel. Dudes are carrying pistols with lazer sights around town late at night. The violence that was once limited to Steffes old place on NH is now showing up at that place that use to be "The Moon Bar" and Crosstown Tavern, and will probably expand to other places very soon. Gunfire in our community will soon be "normal", and not just on weekends, and not just in select locations.

When it happens I will boldly blame every one of you "drugs are cool" idiots. We have these problems because we lack resolve. We are permissive about drugs, so we suffer as a community. Those of you who wink at drugs are welcoming violence into your otherwise peaceful neighborhoods. You don't deserve safety; which is fine, because you won't have safety.

I've heard Topeka has a version of Red Dog Days where the criminals line up and work on their times in the 40-yard dash so they can prepare for field trips in Lawrence.

Looks like they need more work.

Anyone want to guess what gets dismissed as part of a plea deal?

I'm amazed. Most people around here would rather be shot or clubbed with a Billy 100 times rather than to be tazed. I'd take the taze any day. Are you people serious???????? I want to see your beat down then. Oh, yes I feel so sorry for the guy...give me a break...or taze me...what??? It's always OK unless he does it in front of your house and then you will be sooooo upset. Then it would be OK to Taze him. GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bladerunner, My original comment was done (tic) mocking the usual defenders of alleged law breakers on these pages. When this young perp chose to run he accepted the possible consequences of his actions. If anything more than his ego was bruised it is his fault, not the police officer's

0

Bladerunner 4 years, 8 months ago

The drug tax stamp is an awesome law that lets them go after drug dealers for their property. In most cases its the fruits of their crimes.

Roedapple....Legalize harmless....

Really? Have you seen what affect Meth and Crack can have on the families of addicts? Im guessing this guy was holding more than just a little weed for personal use based on the charges.

And for those against tasing....I believe he did have the option of cooperating. A little weed for personal use is just a ticket and release isnt it?

Nice work LPD and KHP!

0

purplesage 4 years, 8 months ago

About all one can say about a tazer is that it is preferable to being shot. There are abundant cases to illustrate how dangerous they really are. If he got zapped him over a fence, as the article makes it sound, I wonder what the landing was like. ddayot - what's so priceless about pain?

As to the drug tax stamp, it is simply a bogus bargaining chip to make a felony out of things that aren't -- which is then used to force plea agreements.

I'm not an old hippie, have never used drugs and deplore the waste of human potential brought about by substance abuse and addiction. I just don't care much for what we call justice these days.

0

ddayot 4 years, 8 months ago

I wish every tazer came with a built in camera.....I could watch those videos ALL day. The attitude adjustments they inflict are priceless.

You don't know him like I do............

It's the "not possessing a tax stamp" charge that always makes me chuckle in these cases.

The drugs are illegal. The intent to distribute is illegal. And, the fact that you were going to illegally sell these illegal drugs without a tax stamp? Now, THAT'S really illegal.
