Lawrence police searching for suspect in armed robbery of Conoco store
Lawrence police released surveillance video Tuesday of an armed robbery at a Lawrence convenience store that occurred Monday night.
Officers are looking for the man who walked into the store, pointed a shotgun at the clerk behind the counter and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.
A police news release said the armed robbery occurred about 9:36 p.m. at the Conoco gasoline station, 2447 W. Sixth St., which also serves as the Greyhound Bus Lines depot.
The surveillance video shows the suspect was in and out of the store in about 1 minute and 10 seconds.
The robber entered the store, handed the female clerk a bag from his pocket and then pointed the gun at her as she loaded money into the bag and then handed it back.
The clerk was not injured during the robbery.
Larry Ojeleye, owner of the store, said the clerk was his 20-year-old daughter.
“That was very terrible and very scary,” Ojeleye said. “For the safety of the people in town, these kind of people should be caught.”
Police said the robber was described as a black man about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing a light-colored tank top, dark shorts, a black stocking hat with the brim turned backward and light-colored tennis shoes. Shortly after the man left the store on foot — heading south along Crestline Drive — a white sport utility vehicle was seen leaving the area.
Anyone with information about the man or the vehicle is asked to call the TIPS Hotline, 843-TIPS, where anonymous tips can be left.
