Lions sweep Pioneers

? Aaron Rea was 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and two stolen bases in the opener, and Jake Green was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer in the nightcap, and Lawrence High’s baseball team swept Leavenworth, 13-2 and 18-2 in four innings on Tuesday.

The Lions outhit the Pioneers, 16-5, on the night and had five home runs.

“That’s what you’re supposed to do in those games,” Lawrence coach Brad Stoll said. “We were much more talented. We tried to set the tone early. We got up early and put it away. It was nice to get some of the younger kids in the lineup tonight.”

Ben Wyatt (1-1) earned the win in Game One, and Mitch Whitson (1-0) won Game Two. It was Whitson’s first varsity start.

“Mitch had to sit a lot,” Stoll said. “Two of those innings were long, and he had to sit forever. It was great for him to come out and compete in a situation like that in his first varsity start.”

Lawrence hit four homers in the first game and put away the second with an 11-run third and a six-run fourth.

“It’s a smaller part, but three of those were absolute bombs,” Stoll said. “We put a lot of good swings on balls.”

Lawrence (8-4) will travel Thursday to Olathe Northwest.
