Jury selected in Lawrence arson trial

A Douglas County prosecutor Monday accused a defendant of burning his ex-girlfriend’s Lawrence mobile home last June as an act of revenge.

Trevor A. Toussaint, 44, Lawrence, faces arson and burglary charges and is accused of setting fire on June 10, 2008, to the southeastern Lawrence mobile home of his ex-girlfriend, Kimberly Berry. Berry and her children were not home at the time.

Toussaint’s trial began Monday in Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin’s courtroom. Attorneys selected 10 women and two men for the jury.

Eve Kemple, an assistant Douglas County district attorney, said prosecutors would present evidence that Toussaint became jealous after their relationship ended and Berry started seeing another man.

Fire investigators have ruled the blaze was set intentionally after gasoline was poured onto Berry’s bed and in the hallway, and then ignited.

Toussaint’s defense attorney, Charles Whitman, said he would make an opening statement later in the trial. In past court appearances, Whitman has disputed that Toussaint was identified as the person who broke into the trailer that day.
