KU student, 22, charged with attempted rape

A 22-year-old Kansas University student was charged with attempted rape and criminal restraint Wednesday, prosecutors said.

Police said they were called to a west Lawrence home around midnight Wednesday after calls from a concerned friend and the 21-year-old victim’s mother.

The man, who is known to the victim, was arrested Wednesday morning and is being detained in Douglas County Jail on $30,000 bond. It is Journal-World policy not to name suspects in sex crimes unless they are convicted.

An arraignment hearing was held Wednesday and the suspect is scheduled to return to court at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for an appearance in front of District Judge Peggy Kittel.
