KU’s Branstetter cleared to play

Kansas University kicker Jacob Branstetter, who missed the Jayhawks’ season-opening victory over Florida International because of eligibility issues, has been cleared to play in this Saturday’s game against visiting Louisiana Tech, the school said Friday.

Branstetter arrived at KU in January of 2007 after a short stint at the Air Force Academy. He sat out a year, as NCAA rules require, and was thought to be eligible for the 2008 season. However, team officials were notified in mid-August that he was five credits short of gaining clearance.

Following the submission of an NCAA petition seeking clearance, the team was notified this week that Branstetter had been deemed eligible to play this season.

Branstetter, a sophomore from Lawton, Okla., is expected to play Saturday.
