Gee-Gees’ three threes not enough

? The law of averages finally caught up with Kansas University’s Canadian exhibition opponents.

Ottawa’s Gee-Gees misfired on 14 of 17 three-point tries in a 95-60 blowout loss to Kansas at Montpetit Hall, just a day after Carleton and McGill swished 15 and 10 treys apiece in one- and five-point losses to the Jayhawks.

“Last night a great shooting team like Carleton made 15 of 24. You shoot it like we did, and it’s a 20-, 30-point game,” Ottawa coach Dave DeAverio said. “Part of it was their defense. We had some open shots. We just didn’t hit them.”

KU missed nine of 13 threes Sunday, but made 35 of 49 twos and shot 62.9 percent overall to the Gee-Gees’ 31.6 percent.

“You know when you play Kansas they will bring guys strong and with great athleticism,” DeAverio said. “They should be very good this year. They were missing three of their guys tonight – twins that are 6-10 and 6-8 and (Sherron) Collins.”

Collins’ surgically repaired left knee felt fine Sunday, but he was held out according to plan. He played 22 minutes Saturday.

¢ Ankle’s OK: Brady Morningstar, who sprained his right ankle in Saturday’s victory over Carleton, did not play Sunday. Self said Morningstar would rest the ankle a week to 10 days, then return to pick-up action and individual drills.

¢ Just one bucket: Tyrone Appleton scored two points in 17 minutes.

“He doesn’t look like he’s comfortable to me. He’s better than he’s shown. He’s got a lot on his plate now, some personal things. He’ll be fine,” Self said.

¢ Wacky nickname: KU didn’t drill the Bee-Gees, but University of Ottawa’s Gee-Gees on Sunday night.

What’s a Gee-Gee?

In horse racing, it’s the first stallion out of the gate. It also refers to the school’s colors, Garnet and Grey.
