Free State, LHS win final district games

10 p.m. update

The Free State High football team defeated Olathe Northwest, 41-9, on Friday at Haskell Stadium. With the victory, the Firebirds were crowned district champions. They will play a home game next week in the Class 6A state playoffs at Haskell against a team to be determined.

Firebirds running back Chucky Hunter rushed for over 200 yards. Free State (6-3) forced four turnovers, including a 23-yard interceptions return for a touchdown by junior Chandler Schmidt.

It wasn’t close from the start. Free State led Olathe Northwest, 35-0, at the half. The Ravens dropped to 1-8 on the year.

9:35 p.m. update

The Lawrence High football team defeated Leavenworth, 49-21, on Friday in its final regular-season game.

With the victory, Lawrence High qualified for the Class 6A state playoffs.

Halftime update

In its final game of the regular season, the Lawrence High football team leads Leavenworth, 42-7, at the half.

Lions running back Jake Green has three touchdown runs at the half, from distances of 1, 46 and 64 yards.

Lawrence High also blocked a punt and fell on the football in the end zone for a separate score. The remaining touchdowns at the half came from a Clifton Sims run and a Clint Pinnick run.
