A 27-year-old Lawrence man is due in court later this month on animal cruelty charges.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested a 27-year-old Lawrence man Tuesday night on four charges of animal cruelty.

Peter Dewey Yellowbird was taken into custody on a warrant at the Douglas County Jail, 3601 E. 25th St., jail records said.

Prosecutors said Yellowbird faces four charges of having physical custody of an animal and intentionally failing to provide food, water, protection from the elements, opportunity for exercise or other care needed for the health or well-being of the animal, as defined by state statute.

The suspect was released on $5,000 bond soon after his arrest, jail records said. Cheryl Wright, a spokeswoman for district attorney Charles Branson, said Yellowbird will appear in court at 3 p.m. Nov. 25.

Donnuts - Please refrain from making derogatory remarks on Native names. No matter how much we dislike this abuser gives us no reason to make fun of the name he was given. I am no way supporting his actions but I am Native as well and many of us here in Lawrence are animal lovers. I have adopted 2 dogs from The Humane Society and I work very hard in our community so that residents like Mr. Yellowbird will be reported.Many thanks to the community for reporting animal abusers!

If the charges are true, then the question would become where is the compassion for the dog? Domestic animals need food, water, and protection, and exercise. That is a fact whether the provider is white, black, brown, yellow, red, pink, or purple pokey doted. I seriously doubt that “they” (whomever “they” is) is out to get some group by doing a charge on animal cruelty. There are much worse charges if someone was really just out to get someone in trouble.

If a humane society worker sees a well fed dog that has no food in it's bowl at that moment, then the dog is labeled neglected and “rescued” from the situation-that's what has happened here. I've seen Mr. Yellowbirds animals, and they've always received top care. I can say with 100% certainty that Mr. Yellowbird is an animal lover that cares deeply for the well-being of his pets. You can speculate all you like, but I know the man! He's a good man. So, remember -if you take Fido for a nice long walk, then feed him a huge bowl of the finest all natural dog food and then leave for work after it's been eaten- your beloved pets could be stolen by the humane society too- for neglect.

I'll tell you another thing, last time I was at the humane society I saw dogs there that were shivering wet in cold concrete cages covered in loose feces; And they're the ones helping? If I were a dog I'd go live with Mr. Yellowbird any day over the humaniacs doggie hell. See ya there lawdog.

There is a HUGE difference between torturing and burning a dog, and allegedly not providing housing, food, or water. Which is false, and as usual the story has been made up and twisted by the humaniacs, when they themselves are guilty of the same treatment they are claiming happened.

Yes, Lawthing I certainly remember the 'scruffy' dog case. I was actually living in KC at that time and I was glad to hear that The Federal court finally stepped in.I know that 4 charges doesn't sound like he needs just a slap on the hands at this point. I don't think it was just 'one' isolated incident that happened. I say, let Kansas law decide on Mr. Yellowbirds fate. Humane Society has gone over and above their call of duty. Bulldog, So when you were at the humane society and noticed these dogs shivering in feces, did you call the authorities? The shelter is licensed by the state, you know. In fact, it's the Kansas Animal Health Department at 785/296-2326 if you feel so strongly. But let me guess - you DIDN'T do that. Were you too busy watching the Yellowbirds “exercise” their oh-so-well-treated pets?

this happend in July of this year, and they charge me Now? After I went to the sherrifs office AND the “humane” society for 3 weeks after this happend with no awnsers on what's going on with my dogs? I HOPE all those who don't have a clue what's going on show up at my court dates for a cold meal of their own words. I was NEVER arrested for this incedent like the jw alleges, but turned myself in after hearing I had a warrent, on my way home from my gramma's funeral… And it's “native American ” month and they gave me a courtdate on my birthday… Prompt arrest, bs.. Hey lawdog, I'm arikara, not Ndn, your hatefull toughts against me only strengthens my medicine, so keep it up. To the rest of you guys, pay attention to the FACTS… Aho

ps when they took my dogs there was at least 90 lbs of dog food and 100+gallons of water and each and every dog had thier own food and waterbowl and thier tethers were at LEAST 10ft long, giving them 20+ feet radius of living space… Much larger than the “cells” at the humane society. They took dogs from me before and HAD to give them back, and they came home full of fleas and smelling like excrament…

Pete YellowVick- Quit fighting dogs. I find the Humane Society to be far less interested in your dogs if you are not a fighting them. How many dogs do you have, sir? Certainly more than usually kept around for recreational/companionship purposes. By the way….when someone is accused of a crime and they jump on the LJW forums to say the “man” set them up and proclaim their innocence to people who wont be deciding their fate, you come off as being hyper-defensive and it makes you look a whole lot more guilty. I hope you all know that KASPER only reports people sentenced to Prison, not to local jail and local charges. This guy is no angel and they just couldn't prove the dog fighting charges on this arrest.
