¢ Lawrence police are investigating a fight that happened early Sunday morning and injured a 57-year-old Lawrence man.

The man was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital after the fight about 1:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the shopping center at 19th Street and Haskell Avenue.

Witnesses said the man got into an argument with one of two men with him, said Sgt. David Hubbel, a police spokesman. Hubbel said witnesses were being uncooperative about specifics of the incident, but at some point the man was punched, fell and hit his head.

Police arrested one man at the scene on an unrelated warrant, but they are still investigating the fight, Hubbel said.

¢ A man said he accidentally shot himself in the foot in west Lawrence early Sunday morning.

After 4 a.m., police were called to Lawrence Memorial Hospital when a 20-year-old Lawrence man arrived with a gunshot wound to his right foot. He said he had been carrying a 9 mm pistol in his pocket, and when he tried to pull it out he accidentally shot himself, said Sgt. David Hubbel, a police spokesman.

The man said the incident happened in the 3800 block of West Sixth Street, but he was not specific about the location, Hubbel said, so officers would likely investigate it further.

Injury accident

Two people were injured after an early morning rear-end collision Sunday about 2 miles south of Ottawa on U.S. Highway 59.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, a northbound 1998 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Shane E. Grant, 23, Eudora, at 6:25 a.m. approached a 1999 Plymouth Voyager van from behind and struck it. The Malibu slid into the east ditch, and the van flipped over and landed on its wheels.

Grant was treated at the scene and released. The driver of the van, Loretta S. Coltrane, 53, suffered disabling injuries, and she was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
