Democrat Clenece Hills, 69, plans to run for the Douglas County Commission's 3rd District seat. A part-time teacher at South Junior High School and a recipient of numerous community awards, Hills is scheduled to announce her candidacy at 10 a.m. today at the county courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets.
Hills, who moved to Lawrence in 1958 and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas University, said she plans to run an "upbeat, forward-thinking campaign, which will be more about what we as a county can do than what we as a county should have done.
"I believe Douglas County can be even better than it already is," Hills said in a statement. "I want to use my skills as a listener and a leader to bring people together to accomplish good things."
Commissioner Jere McElhaney currently holds the 3rd District seat.
