Battery on Mass. St. targets 58-year-old
May 16, 2008
Advertisement
A 58-year-old Lawrence woman was the victim of a battery by a 16-year-old Lawrence girl about 2 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Eighth and Massachusetts streets.
According to Lawrence police Sgt. Paul Fellers, two witnesses reported a vehicle had been blocking the intersection so the occupants of the car could speak with people outside the vehicle. The victim was behind the car that was blocking the intersection and honked.
Fellers said the 16-year-old then got out of the car and started hitting the driver and pulling her hair. Fellers said the girl then drove off and those she was speaking with also left the area. Officers located the two witnesses who identified one juvenile, who was still in the area.
The 16-year-old was located, arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center. She was charged with battery, criminal damage to the victim’s eyeglasses and interference with the police.

All that is left to do if interview the parent(s)/guardian(s) of this messed up teenager, and if it is determined that they/he/she are negligent in their parenting/guardian skills, stick them/him/her in the adult detention center.

But she's a “good” girl… she's never been in any other trouble (eyes rolling)… she had a hard life growing up… she's just misunderstood… it was the other people, she was actually trying to help…
And on and on until she just get a walk or a slap on the wrist and leaves to hit the road to a more violent life… deal hard with them now or deal with them again later in a more serious situation…

I know this 16 yr old girl. There is absolutely NO parent supervision, she has been on her own for most of her life. She will be locked up in JDC for a long time, rightfully so. I do hope that they will try to get her help to manage her anger/violence problem. When violence is an everyday event in a childs life, this is what will happen, they will break and lash out on a helpless person, be it older adult or younger child. My heart goes out for the victim. It must have been very scarey to have been attacked and not to knowing if the others in the vehicle were going to do the same.

srj says, “I know what one high school student will be doing this summer.”
Do you really? Or do you just hope she will?
I'll wager the young lady involved won't do anything different except cause more trouble.
I'll also wager the judge (if she ever stands before one) will say something to the effect, “Miss name here you know you shouldn't do that don't you? Well, since you've said to the court and prosecutor that you really didn't mean to beat that elderly woman mercilessly because she 'dissed you and that you won't do it again. You just go ahead and continue leading life as you choose to.”
As an aside - I know the woman was 58 but that's getting close to elderly and I don't know what age group to place her in.

Once again, locate the people/person who should be responsible for this kid and make an example of them/him/her. The actions and behavior of this teenager are likely attributed to the neglect of someone in her care. They/he/she should be held accountable in criminal and civil court.

Ah, yes. It's not the attacker's fault. It's the parents' fault.
I would wager that widely-shared attitudes like this are at least as responsible for delinquent behavior than any alleged lack of supervision. Alright, that may be an overstatement, but seriously, it doesn't help things when people are ready and willing to assign partial or total responsibility to people not directly involved with the conduct itself.
There are plenty of kids with bad or inattentive parents. That sucks. And it's like starting with one strike against you. But plenty of kids with bad parents don't assault complete strangers. At what point is it the attacker's fault? Are you telling me a 16 year old doesn't know that this behavior is unacceptable and carries consequences?

geniusman,
Don't get me wrong, this kid has issues. This type of behavior is wrong in so many ways that you have to place the immediate blame on the individual who committed the crime. That person should bare the full brunt of the judicial and legal process and should have to pay for their incredibly poor judgement.
Still, contributory negligence can't be ruled out on this one. Maybe I am wrong, maybe this kid has a wonderful loving family and just went berzerk for no reason.

Absolutely Incredible! It's hard to even wrap my mind around this happening in downtown Lawrence. I've been waiting for a story like this about one of our transient “guests,” but a teenage girl??? WTH? There were side comments yesterday about the teens flashing gang type signs. Is that part of the bigger story? There has to me more to this than what has been reported.
On a side note, don't forget that your vehicle is a pretty powerful weapon in a situation like that. If you feel like your life is in danger, roll up the window and hit the gas.

Quit blaming the victim. By the time someone is 16, even someone without attentive parental guidance, they should know that it isn't socially acceptable or even legal to attack another human being. This child is responsible for her actions.

of course this happened on a wednesday. downtown is full of kids acting like idiots on that day because of the early release—throwing rocks at scuptures, making comments about people as they walk by, breaking branches off of trees, kicking mulch from planters onto the sidewalk, blocking sidewalks and carelessly walking into people, emptying free literature from their display cases and strewing it across the ground, running out into the street in front of cars, being loud and stupid, etc. it's pretty ridiculous after you observe it over and over again every week.

is this little violent shred going to appear b before judge shepard, being a juvy?
don't expect justice being done by her in this case.
***
at age 16, yes the little turd knew what she was doing was wrong, but that particular age is in the transitional time between childhood and adulthood: sexual consent/drivers' licenses; vote in less than two years. can join the military at 17. our society has things a little muddy there at that age. if she commits property crimes, parents can still be held liable, isn't that true?
please! punish this girl severely, no compassion and make an example (else, 'lord of the flies'). find the loser adult that's *supposed to be responsible for her, to know where she is, to give her direction in life. punish that grownup shred to the full extent, and including restitution for the glasses.
***
this environment downtown is most destructive to the future of these kids themselves! if we as a community let them continue with their destructive and harmful behaviors (listed above) the kids won't become responsible members of society.
finally, install water cannons on top of some downtown buildings and video cameras for directing them.

I was in Des Moines years ago, when there was a lot of traffic coming to a signal. Multiple lanes. This one car shot forward, but then had to stop. Then another car, we could see had all kinds of young men hanging out the windows with sticks, bats, and lord knows what else..screaming insults and threats. They manuvered closer, the first car trying to get away, The 2nd car pulled up along side, and they started busting the 1st car up, who managed to get enough room in front of him, to drive over the raised median, cut through the red light and escape. The other car was trapped by stopped traffic.
Of course, who knows what happened later, it was really wild.

The victim here is my mother. Aside from the obvious, no one deserves to be assaulted, my mother did nothing wrong. Sitting behind this girl that was blocking the road to speak to friends on the street, leaving no path to go around, my mother honked once. The person behind her was less patient. After they honked repeatedly, the 16 year old attacked my mother. I think she showed patience and was rewarded with chunks of hair pulled out, bruises and a reinjured concussion.
Blame the victim, strike that, blame my mother…. shame on you!

SonOfKU_________Have your mother check into filing a claim or suing the girl's insurance company. Make the police give her a ticket or press charges for anything possible, such as road rage. The important thing is to get it on her driving record. They might not do much in court and she is a juvinile, but her insurance and driving record will follow her. I know it's a lot of time involved, but we have to start showing the kids today that cannot just do what they want or hurt whoever they want. Good luck.
