LHS baseball team drops Washburn Rural in 6A Regionals

Topeka With a movie star smile that makes the women swoon and a big league slider that buckles the knees of batters, it’s no wonder that the Lawrence High baseball squad refers to Dorian Green as “Hollywood.”
“He always seems to get a little bit more press than some of us, so I guess that makes him an easy target,” senior Travis Sanders said of the squad’s ribbing of Green. “He deserves it (the press), though, and we all know that. I love the guy. He can throw like that and get all the press as long as we get wins.”
Green was Mr. Big Time for the Lions both on the mound and at the plate in LHS’ 9-1 victory over Washburn Rural in the regional championship game Wednesday at Shawnee County Amateur Baseball Association park.
The win earned Lawrence its second straight trip to state, which will be held May 23-24 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
“Obviously going back to state is a good accomplishment for our baseball program,” Green said. “So we’re ready to go and hopefully bring back a state championship to Lawrence High.”
Green announced his presence with authority against Rural with a few fastballs down the heart of the plate early. Then Green mixed in the slider that the Junior Blues batters had difficulty handling.
The junior went all seven innings, gave up one unearned run on five hits and struck out eight.
“Some of those sliders were nasty and I think you’ve got to give a lot of credit to Dorian, but you’ve also got to give a lot of credit to coach (Eric) Thompson, our pitching coach,” LHS baseball coach Brad Stoll said. “He saw some things on film and made some great adjustments. Dorian’s so athletic, so intelligent and so coachable. He took everything coach Thompson gave him, cleaned it up, found that slider and it was really special tonight.”
Green was also special at the plate, hitting a two-run double in his first plate appearance against Washburn Rural as part of a four-run second inning.
“I don’t know where that plate appearance came from, honestly,” Sanders said. “He’s been struggling at the plate, but big players show up in big games. He definitely has ice in his veins.”
The rally was started when Sanders drew a walk on a full count and fellow senior Joe Kornbrust knocked him in with a double. Tyler Bailey had a single to score Kornbrust before Green knocked in both Bailey and Jake Green, who had reached on a walk.
LHS scored three more in the sixth when Dorian hit a two-run triple to plate Kornbrust and Bailey. That was followed by an RBI single from Aaron Rea.
The Lions’ offense caught fire earlier in the day when they had to go through Manhattan prior to facing Washburn Rural.
Lawrence collected 10 hits in a 4-3 win against Manhattan, which ended the Indians’ run of five years making an appearance at state.
Chase Muder came up with the big runs for LHS in the afternoon game. The senior catcher hit a two-run double down the left field line to score Dorian and Rea. After stealing third, Muder then scored LHS’ fourth run on a wild pitch.
Senior starter Tom Schuh went six innings and just like Green in Game 2, all three runs the lefty allowed were unearned. After allowing six hits and striking out four batters, Schuh turned the ball over to Kornbrust, who closed out Manhattan in order to end the game.
“We’re just trying to do what we always try to do in keeping the team together and being strong leaders,” Kornbrust said of the seniors. “We did our thing and everything just came together.”

Congrats to the Lions.
Glad to see you could (ahem) overcome your poor coaching.

Where are “bash the Lion's” comments now? Come on, you know who you are! All the heat Stoll and the boys took early on looks like it paid off in the long run. They have shown toughness all year long, now they get a little bit of a reward. Let's hope it continues with Freestate meeting them in the state title game. Go Lions!

Take_a_letter_Maria,
Excellent effort on the comment. I wish the doubters would speak up now. They seem to be staying away. Go Lions.

It's great that LHS is going to the state tournament! But even more, it's great that we have high school baseball in Lawrence, period.
Baseball wasn't an interscholastic sport in Lawrence in the 1960s. That always seemed strange to me, given how many good athletes lived in town in those days. Had there been a baseball team at Lawrence High in the early 60s I would not have been on it, as I wasn't skilled enough. But other boys my age were and they'd have been fun to watch.
So I don't know what changed, or exactly when it changed, but I'm sure glad our city's young guys can compete with other schools in baseball now. There's no better way to shift from spring into summer.than to play baseball.

riverat - I'm not sure of just what year it was, but you can thank Lynn Harrod for really getting the ball rolling on hs baseball in Lawrence. He set the wheels in motion by showing up for fastpitch softball tryouts because there wasn't a baseball team to try-out for. I don't think he ever got to play on a hs bb team, but he certainly was key in getting that first team approved.

Hey, LHS fans, aren't you planning to head over to Washburn Rural to watch girls soccer knock-off Wahburn Rural. at 6 PM tonight.
If not, you should be. Heck, I'm a Free Stater and will be there to see some good soccer. So should you!
As to Lynn Harrod, he's the best administrtor in Lawrence schools. Cares about his students and maintains his principles. Too bad he's stuck “south of the border”, so to speak.

Lynn's “sin” is that he isn't one of Randy's good ol' boys. He should have been named Principal at West or Central when those jobs were open, but Weaselman had to move Myron Melton into West because the p's at Langston Hughes were in a revolt over his ineptness there yet being one of Randy's guys he moved to a position he is completely ill prepared to do. It's surprising MM hasn't received a job at the Service Center by now. The Central job went to someone who has done a fine job, but again Lynn got passed over because he didn't play the game. One of my big concerns right now is that Mr. Harrod will end up leaving the school district for a district that will recognize and reward his abilities.

WOW! I can't believe you guys were able to figure out a way to turn a positive sports story into a political issue! I'm sure coach Stoll and the kids really appreciate all the “support” they've gotten in these comments (all two of them)… A great coach and a stellar group of kids deserve a lot more than all of you b*tchin and moaning about politics that the kids on the team have nothing to do with!
Congrats to coach Stoll and the rest of the Lions! Good luck in your return to state!

the_crowd_goes_wild, great job. I think the key word you used is “return” as it going back to state. Two state tournaments for Coach Stoll in four years at LHS. What school wouldn't accept this?

Wow! Sorry to upset you so Randy.
Yes, I drifted off topic a little bit, but these players do owe quite a bit to Lynn Harrod whether they know it or not. The fact that he may or may not be looking outside our district because of politics is something that these coaches take to heart even if their kids don't know it effects them, not to mention Mr. Harrod is one of their biggest supporters.
So once again, congratulations to the Lions. Hopefully they can be joined by FSHS and be on opposite sides of the bracket in order to make it an all Lawrence championship.
