Police say they have a suspect in Sunday’s fatal hit-and-run

Lawrence Police said this afternoon they have a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning, according a report released today.
The 22-year-old male suspect from Lawrence has not been arrested.
Thomas Crum, 60, died after the two-vehicle collision just before 2 a.m. on West Sixth Street, a few blocks east of Kasold Drive.
Crum was driving a 1984 Pontiac east on Sixth Street when his vehicle was struck by what police described as a silver Jeep heading north on Gateway Court. The driver of the Jeep fled the scene.
The impact of the collision propelled Crum’s car into the side of the Gateway Automotive building, 534 Gateway Drive.
Crum was taken by air ambulance to a Kansas City area hospital, where he later died.
Police said when the investigation is complete they will forward it to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Yeti (and everyone else who trots out these same comments whenever…)
Before you strike up “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on your fife & drum and mount the steps of the nearest courthouse to teach your ignorant fellow citizens the principles upon which this country was founded, can you please stop to consider:
(1) most are already well aware of (and in agreement with) those principles
(2) this is an anonymous, two-bit public forum, not an official jury pool
(3) any consequences most people wish on “perpetrators” here are intended (implicitly and often explicitly, as when they say, “If he's convicted….” ) to take effect after due process has been carried out
(4) people are really just blowing off steam, due to frustration, anguish over the victim, etc
(5) no one is about to be lynched by cyber comments made on (again) an anonymous forum.
People need a place to release frustrations. Better to blather here and wish that (if truly guilty) someone has the book thrown at them than to bottle up those frustrations and go home and kick the dog… or get drunk and kill somebody.

Why the sarcasm? If you read the comments posted on the older story already, you would see some pretty severe statements.
As for this being a mindless discussion to take out frustrations, if thats your bag, knock yourself out. I, however, will save my criticisms and calls for justice on those of whom who have been proven to deserve them.
I just find it a bit interesting that for all the Christian talk you will often find on these boards, there is an awful lot of sinners throwing stones. Just my two cents. But, hey, continue the cyber-lynching if it so enriches your lives.

Oh so sorry, he kills a human being and we get him for leaving the scene of an accident? That gets him 3 months in jail served over the summer (at least in Fairchild's court). In the meantime the LPD aren't able to gather evidence of
a felony. So lesson to everyone, kill a human being in Lawrence, don't stay around and try and help, run like hell and f'ing Bob Fairchild will cut you a big break and morons like you will defend him online.
It is morally repugnant, he and everyone who leaves the scene of a serious or fatal accident should be given the maximum sentence of all proved charges served consecatively, no probation, no parol, no breaks.

absolutely agree w/Sigmund's comment!
when people lose faith in the justice system, that it will render proper judgments and mete out fitting punishments, and that it will represent in a symbolic way the suffering of the killed maimed and bereived. when that faith is lost, guess what happens…vigilantism springs up spontaneously. history: san francisco.
we have good reason to doubt the legal system generally, and the effectiveness of our local functionaries: too many plea bargains, too shart sentences, etc.
so, mr. yeti, instead of directing your moral outrage at us who have plenty to vent about on here, you should instead direct your elitist moral snobbery at the judges/DA!

I certainly hope the LPD subpoenas Facebook. If he has a MySpace profile, they ought do subpoena them too. They have his profile history. It is trivially easy to show what the profile looked like prior to his edits. Once it's on the internet, it's there forever. He's hosed either way; leave it up and it's incriminating, take it down and it looks like he has something to hide.

No problem, lawyers call such acts “evidence” showing conciseness of guilt. “Myface” and “Spacebook” keep revision histories along with IP's, times, and all changes. The DA should have no problem issuing a subpoena and admitting logs into evidence.
Still what is the point? In Lawrence, KS if he draws Judge Fairchild he is likely to get 3 months in jail (served over the summer when it isn't too inconvenient) for killing a human being whose life was likely more valuable to society than both he and his girlfriend.

For all those making comments about his facebook profile invovling booze associations, look at pretty much any college kids profile on there and you will certainly see some pictures where they are holding some sort of alcoholic beverage. It's not just this guy. He doesn't need thousands of strangers telling him what he did was wrong, his conscious is eating at him every second. I would agree with most of your comments that he would have likely received somewhat of a minor sentencing(which has been pathetically repeated throughout Lawrence trials involving drunk drivers), but since he ran I think it absolutely guaranteed a strong decision from the judge that presides over this case.

At no point do I think I approached outrage. I believe I even said he should be punished for leaving the scene.
As for my moral snobbery, I believe my point has been made about jumping to conclusions by the posts about his Facebook page. A 22 year old has pics of him drinking on his Facebook page….shocking. Shall we arrest all 22 year olds with drinking pics on their page for suspicion of drunk driving? “Elitist moral snobbery”…I guess, if waiting to see the facts come out before we go all “armchair detective” and presume to know the exact circumstances.
“Moral snobbery”…Talk about the pot and kettle.

—weatherman— who thinks he's a mindreader. if this guy knows this comment blog is out here, and it reflects community anger at what he did, I'd say that's a pretty darned good thing! you have no grounds to believe he has one shred of guilt, unless you know him personally? or you are an enabler of his?

I have no problem with you calling the suspect cowardly or irresponsible. However you use the word, kill, like you were there. My point was only that jumping to conclusions can be a dangerous exercise. For instance, whats to stop me from concluding that the other driver was drunk as well. I mean, he was coming home from his birthday party at 2am. Is it that much of a logical leap? What if they were both sober and the kid freaked out because he didn't have insurance or something like that? Punished for leaving the scene? Sure. But a murderer? Let's remember that intersection is horrendous.
The bottom line is, if the facts come out like most of you seem to think they will, then yeah, send him away for a really long time.

I, too, am a graduating senior in college, and have some understanding of how we (college boys) think. Let's not be so quick to blame this kid for the worst. If he was driving and in the car, then he definately messed up by fleeing the scene of the accident. No dispute there.
However, all college students engage in social drinking on occasion, and many post photos of such activites on Facebook. This alone does not mean that he was driving drunk. Furthermore, the fact that he got on Facebook later after the accident does not suggest anything at all. When students are really stressed, they get on Facebook. Period.
If the kid was driving, his future is in serious trouble. Even if he doesn't do much jail-time, he still has the possibility of a felony on his record. Not easy to find a good job with that albatross hanging around his neck.
Everyone should calm down until the facts come out.

I believe that some of you are being stupid. I know personally that I have messed up and driven drunk and that doesn't make me less of a person or doesn't mean that I'm a bad guy. I make mistakes. This kid made a mistake and it cost him and another person's life, not only will he get jail time and even if he doesn't, he has to live with the fact that he took this guy's life no matter how you put it. It is a crappy burden to take, but it's a burden that he has b/c he made a mistake. You all can stop your finger pointing b/c you are sooo perfect. I personally know Jake. He is a great guy and has a huge heart, but do i think he was wrong, yes i do, and you know what I still love him like a brother and would sit proudly by him. So go ahead and check his facebook and send him hate messages, b/c that is so mature and stand behind your anonymous names and make judgement. I'm sorry a man lost his life, but that doesn't mean that something good can't come out of it. Let justice run it's course and keep your nose out of other peoples business and if you do look him up on facebook or myspace that means you need to get a life.

First of all I want to say that I am sorry for the loss of Mr. Crum. It is a shame when a life is taken when it doesn't need to be. I am personal believer in things happen for a reason and I do believe good things can come of this. That might sound harsh to you or whoever but I just feel that way. Many of you sit there and type your comments about Mr. Deckert. I feel that he deserves a fair shot at justice and for you to sit there and throw stone after stone, talking about his facebook and myspace and talking about him as you know him b/c he has a couple pictures with some beer bottles. First I want to say to some of you that you are trying to start a fire that doesn't need to be started. Get lives and stop stalking him on the internet. I know Jake personally and know he is a GREAT guy. He has a huge heart, a love for his family and will do anything for his friends. Now, I am not saying that Jake is innocent but I am saying that you need to let justice run it's course. I know he will get jail time and will have a punishment, and even if he doesn't he has to live with the fact that he killed Mr. Crum. I can't imagine that burden and that horror and some of you are going to say good he needs to, well don't worry b/c it does bother him and will haunt him. Just b/c he has a facebook status of something off the wall doesn't mean that he doesn't care and is cold hearted. Jake is a great guy and i am proud to have him as a friend. I pray for him and also for the Crum family.

What is illogical about suggesting a 22 year old, whose silver jeep was slammed into a car killing a man, then left the scene for the man to die, then suddenly the owners social networking pages with friends who were with him that night “hoping his car is OK” are deleted? If he wasn't driving his silver jeep why delete it or report the damage to insurance or police? And what is illogical about desperately wishing for a Karmic Universe? Seriously?

As many will point out the only facts we know are that the driver of the silver jeep left the scene of a fatal accident and the owner of said newly damaged jeep social networking pages with incriminating statement have been deleted. The victim could have been Jack the Ripper, Mother Teresa, or any of the posters on this page and it makes little difference to me.

Actually, yes, I can say that I have never drove drunk! Its stupid and idiotic! I was raised to know better! And yes he made a mistake, but none the less, he needs to be punished for the very stupid mistake that he made. Was it really worth it to go get drunk and then get behind the wheel. Sounds like since he was such a great guy that he had plenty of friends that he could have called to give him a ride. Or a taxi for that matter! He knew the consequences of what could happen when he got behind the wheel drunk!

The only good that can come from this is that Jake is made an example out of and the justice systems throws the book at him. So that anyone who thinks about doing something like this again will think about the innocent lives that maybe taken. A very treasured life was taken from this mistake, a life that can not be replaced.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Crum family.
Tom will truly be missed.

“I, too, am a graduating senior in college, […] then he definately messed up by fleeing the scene of the accident.”
How does someone get to be a senior in college and not know how to spell “definitely?” Good luck with the job hunt.

If you know the suspect I strongly suggest you quit posting and get your friend to a very good criminal defense lawyer very quickly.
After these “accidents” where people are kil
