Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical investigators determined misuse of smoking material sparked a blaze shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment, 1714 Vt.

In a statement, Division Chief Eve Tolefree said the fire was contained to one apartment and no one was injured. No one was at home when firefighters arrived. One person, who was displaced by the fire, is receiving assistance from the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross.

Damages are estimated at $7,000.
