Ten men were rescued from the chilly waters of Clinton Lake Saturday morning after their canoes capsized.

The 10 canoeists were treated at the state maintenance building at the lake, according to Lawrence Fire & Medical Battalion Chief Rob Kort. All were suffering symptoms of hypothermia, Kort said.

Officials said wind on the lake caused water to lap into the canoes. Apparently, as canoeists tried to bail water from their vessels, the canoes capsized.

Kort said his department was called about 8:40 a.m. and rescuers launched three boats into the water.

The men were participants in a race that features 12 or 24 hours of continuous mountain biking, paddling, running, trekking, orienteering and ropes. The race – called Bonk Hard Sunflower – attracted more than 100 participants, according to an organizer.

Rescuers and race organizers say all participants are accounted for.
