LHS swimming routs SM South

The Lawrence High girls swimming and diving team dominated its dual against Shawnee Mission South on Thursday at Carl Knox Natatorium.

The LHS squad took first in 10 of the 12 events to claim a 119-66 victory.

“This was a fun meet for us,” LHS swimming coach Kent McDonald said. “We have a large team, a lot of good swimmers, so we expected to do well, and they had the incentive of being at home.”

The lopsided nature of the dual was best displayed by Elle Weber, who won the 200 individual medley by nearly 13 seconds with her time of 2 minutes, 20.97 seconds. She also won the 100 breaststroke with an 11-second advantage at 1:14.57.

“I added some time in both of the events, but I guess it was still good enough,” Weber said. “I just didn’t have the competition that I have at some meets, and the pool is not that fast, so that contributed to the slower times.”

The Lions’ Mallory West put on an impressive showing of her own in the one-meter dive. Trying a new dive, West improved her season-best total with a score of 244.10 – a 74.8-point advantage over second place.

On the other end of the spectrum, Lawrence’s Jessica Boyer had narrow victories over a couple of teammates in the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.

The Lawrence sophomore topped Sarah Schwartz in the butterfly by a mere 0.44 seconds with her time of 1:04.43.

Boyer (5:40.87) edged teammate Erina Houk (5:41.40) for first in the 500 freestyle, but both girls earned automatic berths to the state tournament in May with their times.

“It was kind of crazy,” Boyer said of her close finishes. “I just saw them there and thought, ‘Man, they’re my friends so I might as well race them.’ But it was more difficult than I thought.”

Houk did claim a victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.72 – eight seconds faster than teammate Hannah Buchner in second place.

Weber, Houk and Boyer joined Sarah Schwartz on the winning 400 freestyle relay team, which also qualified for state. The relay team knocked nearly eight seconds off its best time with a time of 3:57.96.

“We’ve been trying to get that cut,” Boyer said. “We tried Tuesday, and it didn’t work too well so we were all motivated and worked on it our hardest. It gives us momentum to go to a better pool and get faster at it over the season.”

The team will get an opportunity to improve its times at a faster pool March 5 when it travels to the Olathe Invite.
