Walters in line at Mercer

? Former Kansas University basketball coach Rex Walters is in line to become the next head basketball coach at Mercer, the Macon (Ga.) Telegraph reports.

Walters, who just completed his second year at Florida Atlantic, interviewed at Mercer last Thursday and was back in town Monday. He met with Mercer’s team Monday afternoon at the University Center. No announcement was made Tuesday.

Walters just finished his second year as head coach at Florida Atlantic and has a 31-33 overall record, including 20-20 in the Sun Belt. He was an assistant at Florida Atlantic for a year under Matt Doherty, who took over two years after he was fired at North Carolina.

Mercer is allegedly putting some serious financial incentives on the table for Walters, sources say, with a salary offer of between $200,000 and $250,000. Former head coach Mark Slonaker’s salary in his final year was reportedly between $100,000 and $150,000.
