Injury accident

A 59-year-old Lawrence woman suffered life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle accident just before 5 p.m. Sunday. Emergency crews responded to the accident near the intersection of East 550 Road and U.S. Highway 40, northwest of Lawrence.

According to Lt. Kari Wempe of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Rita Flowers was headed west on U.S. 40 when her Honda Civic crossed into the oncoming lane, traveled through a driveway and hit a tree head-on. The woman was extricated from the vehicle and flown by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

Flowers’ condition was unavailable Sunday night.
