K-10 resurfacing set to begin Tuesday

It’s road construction season.

And yes, Lawrence-area commuters, you will get a piece of it.

Beginning Tuesday, crews will start on a resurfacing project on Kansas Highway 10 from the Johnson-Douglas county line east to the Kansas Highway 7 junction.

“I would expect some delays with this as well, not major but minor,” said Kimberly Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Through the end of July, Douglas County drivers heading to and from the Olathe and Overland Park areas during the day can expect the highway to be reduced to one lane at certain spots along that 12-mile stretch of road.

Hamm Inc., of Perry, the primary contractor, will conduct the $1.8 million resurfacing work. Crews will apply a 5/8-inch layer of asphalt on top of a special glue that binds the new asphalt overlay to the old pavement to make it smoother, to help with drainage and to reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

They also will newly mark the pavement on the resurfaced sections of K-10 and K-7. Crews are expected to work Monday through Friday during daylight, which is when drivers could encounter one-lane restrictions.

Qualls said several highways in the Kansas City area were being resurfaced this summer. Updated construction information in the area can be viewed online at www.ksdot.org/ kcmetro/laneclose.asp.

KDOT officials said drivers should plan to take extra time for their commute and to be alert and obey warning signs when approaching and traveling through the work zone. Admittedly, driving through one lane might get frustrating, Qualls said.

“But if drivers have patience, they’re going to really enjoy the end product that they’ll be driving on every day,” she said.
