Road work projects set to begin across city

Public Works Director Chuck Soules told city commissioners Tuesday that several construction projects are ready to begin.

Soules said the intersection of 19th and Louisiana streets would close to all traffic Tuesday to allow construction crews to rebuild the intersection. The road will be closed all summer, with a planned opening just before adjacent Lawrence High School opens in August.

Commissioners also awarded a $491,000 contract to Lawrence-based LRM Industries to repave Massachusetts Street and several other roads in the area. Soules said that means work on repaving Massachusetts could start as early as next week.

Work to add a left-turn lane on Harper Street south of 23rd Street in eastern Lawrence is expected to begin June 2. That will cause parts of Harper Street to be closed.

Soules said he also has been told by the Kansas Turnpike Authority that the North Iowa Street bridge over the turnpike is scheduled to open Friday.
