Man charged with causing damage at bar

A 41-year-old Lawrence man was charged Wednesday with breaking into an east Lawrence bar and causing damage.

Dennis T. Banks is being held in Douglas County Jail on $7,500 bond. He was charged with burglary, two counts of criminal damage to property and misdemeanor theft.

At 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, a Lawrence police officer was checking a damaged front window at the Cross Town Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave., when he found a man lying on a stage inside the building.

Police also said they found damage to amusement games in the bar. The total damage to the bar and game machines was estimated at more than $16,000.

Police also found damage to the Tyler Appliance store next door to the tavern, but no charges have been filed in that incident.
