Westar Energy spokes-woman Erin La Row said Sunday a failed arrester was the culprit behind a power outage that affected nearly 800 Lawrence customers early Sunday. Arresters protect lines from lightening and power surges, La Row said. She did not know what caused the arrester to fail. The outage occurred after 12:30 a.m.

Injury accidents

A Mission man was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Sunday after striking a deer while riding a motorcycle on U.S. 59, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report. Val V. Pfannenstiel, 65, was southbound about 2.5 miles south of Lawrence when his 2007 Harley Davidson struck a deer in the roadway, the report said. The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m.

¢ Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded to report of a structure fire at 2200 Harper St. The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Crews found smoke coming from the residence and extinguished a fire that had started in a clothing dryer and extended to a wall, said Joe Hoelscher, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical division chief. There were no injuries and the damage was estimated at $1,000, Hoelscher said.
