Suspect in chase appears in court

A De Soto man accused of leading officers on a chase Sunday from Eudora to east of Lawrence made his first appearance in court Tuesday.

Nicholas M. Jacobs, 34, faces charges of eluding police, obstruction, driving on a suspended license and reckless driving.

Prosecutors said he also had warrants out for his arrest in Missouri and Johnson County, but Jacobs told District Judge Paula Martin that he missed court appearances because he was “deathly ill.”

Assistant District Attorney Brenda Clary had asked for a $20,000 bond, partly because of an officer’s statement that alleged Jacobs told him he had a gun and was not afraid to use it on him.

But Martin set his bond at $5,000 because she said a judge had already reviewed those allegations when signing the affidavit. She also appointed Branden Smith as his attorney, and she set his next court appearance for 2 p.m. July 31.
