Two men charged with robbery on east side

Two men have been charged in Douglas County District Court with robbing a man early Sunday on Lawrence’s east side.

Willie K. Franklin, 18, and Samuel Anthony McReynolds were each charged with one count of robbery. Both are being held in Douglas County Jail on $20,000 bond.

A 19-year-old Lawrence man called Lawrence police about 3:30 a.m. Sunday and reported he had been robbed by two men who got out of a van.

He said the incident occurred in the area of East 19th Street and Miller Drive. The suspects reportedly took the man’s backpack and contents valued at $369 before driving off in the van.

Police stopped the van at 10th and Kentucky streets. Officers found the two suspects and a 15-year-old girl in the van.

The girl told police the two men had touched her inappropriately and tried to make her drink an alcoholic beverage.

District Attorney Charles Branson said Tuesday there was not sufficient evidence to support charges against the men concerning the girl’s claims.

Franklin and McReynolds are to appear in court July 15 for the setting of a preliminary hearing.
