20-year-old pregnant woman murdered in Lansing

Victim was in Leavenworth home that was pipe-bomb target earlier this month

? A slaying Tuesday night in Lansing claimed the life of a 20-year-old pregnant woman who had escaped injury earlier this month when a house was bombed in Leavenworth.

Police were called to Wiley’s Wild Woods Mobile Home Park, 921 S. Main St., Lansing, shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday for a reported shooting. There, they found the body of a 20-year-old pregnant woman, who had been shot in the head, authorities said.

Lansing Police Chief Steve Wayman said the woman and a man were the only two people in the mobile home when the shooter entered, fired “a couple of shots” and fled.

Initial reports say the shooter stormed through the door of the mobile home before firing, but Wayman added, “I had heard that the door was kicked open and shots fired, but I don’t know if that’s the case. The investigation is ongoing.”

Wayman said the male who was in the mobile home was questioned but was not a suspect at this time. “We don’t know if it was a boyfriend-girlfriend, husband-wife, acquaintance or any of the above,” Wayman said.

Acting Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said the woman, whose name had not been released as of this morning, had been present Jan. 11 at a Leavenworth house that was the target of a pipe bomb.

A search of the mobile home park and surrounding area, which included a Highway Patrol helicopter, did not yield a suspect.

The two police chiefs scheduled a news conference for 2 p.m. today to update the media on the investigation.
