LHS warms up for big week

Boys, girls topple Bears; rivals, regionals loom

Lawrence High's Becca Stack lets it fly against Oskaloosa. Stack bowled a 477 on Monday at Royal Crest Lanes.

A match against Oskaloosa was just like another practice for the Lawrence High bowling team.

With a dual against Free State today and Kansas Class 6A regionals coming up Saturday, LHS swept its head-to-head match against OHS on Monday at Royal Crest Lanes.

“This was just another meet before regionals,” Ben Wyatt said. “We were just wanting to get another meet in before regionals. It’s just practice, and practice makes you better.”

Wyatt finished with the best series with a 617 in the Lions boys’ 2,281-1,633 victory over the Bears.

“I’ve led our team before, but just not : overall,” said Wyatt, who was a little disappointed with his 189 in the third game. “But it’s not really anything special.”

LHS’s Tyler Bailey came up two pins shy of joining Wyatt with a 600-plus series thanks to his strong finish. Bailey bowled the highest game of the match with his 266 in Game 3.

Josh Russell (542 series) and Tanner Kilmer (524) also contributed to the final team total.

Lawrence’s Tiffany Demaline had the top girls series at 618 as the girls defeated Oskaloosa, 2,143-1,375.

“I didn’t shoot very well this weekend at Sunflower League – had some dry conditions and couldn’t adjust to them right – on Saturday,” Demaline said. “But today, it just felt comfortable being at home.”

Danielle Husted had the top girls game with a 222 in her third game for a series of 502. Jessica Wyatt with a 530 series and Mallory Hughes-Pfeifer with 493 rounded out Lawrence’s top four female bowlers.

Both Demaline and Ben Wyatt said today’s dual with cross-town rival Free State wasn’t about LHS versus FSHS, but just that it is one last match before traveling to Topeka on Saturday for regionals.

“I think a lot of them just want to come out and do well as a team just to get ready for Saturday,” LHS coach Brandi Perry said. “I think in the back of their mind, the whole Free State rivalry is there.

“But for the most part I think that they can keep their heads straight and really focus on their bowling instead of the rivalry between the two schools. I just think for them to come out and stay focused will help them to stay focused on Saturday as well.”

Micah Fraser was the top Oskaloosa boys bowler with a 422 series. The Oskaloosa girls squad was led by a 404 series from Michelle O’Connor.
