Three people arrested after brawls

Three people are arrested early Friday morning at a south Lawrence apartment complex after two separate brawls where a broken bottle was used as a weapon. Enlarge video

A 20-year-old man was arrested early Friday following a fight that injured five people in a south Lawrence apartment building.

Police were called at 4:15 a.m. to investigate a disturbance at Hampton Court apartments, which is in the 1700 block of West 24th Street.

Officers found four women and a man who had been cut by someone armed with a broken bottle, according to a police news release. The incident began when the injured man, 19, and the suspect got into a fight that ended in the hallway outside an apartment.

A helicopter ambulance was called and landed in a nearby parking lot. The 19-year-old was flown to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment of facial cuts.

A 27-year-old Lawrence woman was taken by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to undergo surgery for cuts to her wrist, police said. Two other women, a 30-year-old from Lawrence and a 20-year-old from Anandarko, Okla., also were taken to LMH. A 21-year-old Lawrence woman was treated at the scene.

Three hours later, at 7:15 a.m., police were called back to the apartment complex to investigate a burglary in progress. A man said two women had entered his apartment without permission when he answered the door. One of the women acted in a threatening manner and the man said he picked up a broken bottle, which the second woman took from him and began battering him with it, cutting his face.

Police arrested a 30-year-old Lawrence woman and a 20-year-old Oklahoma woman. Both women were victims in the earlier incident, police said.

No other details were available Friday and charges were pending.

actually it's over 2 mill..but mr. thaiwanese (howeva u spell it) thinks it is top notch compared to his country..so those buildings will remain til he finds something else that will fund his other companies and apartments..and to the gurl BRANDIE 785..what are you so worried for..this don't even affect you in anyway..that fool shouldn't of never started nothing..this is not his first time fighting with a knife or a bottle. I know this, he did it in the reserves he did it to 2 black guys and a white guy, you know why? cuz he can't fight one on one..so yeah go ahead and drop it, because all this isn't worth it. I know a lot about alot of people and including things of yourself..any of my mistakes i have made are something that i am proud of and will stand up with my head high and know that i did what i did. But i never had to fight with weapons. That just shows how he's a coward..so yeah like i said just sleep tight and wait til this happens in your family..where ever that is!! Cuz Your Step daddi (LOL) is married now to a man..(LOL) have a great life.

youve got your brandies mixed up.to be honest i didnt see anything happen. i was going to leave,i was accually outside bout to step in my car when i saw people running out. nope were not blood. not one drop. you dont need blood to be family. in this case, i mean according to you i supose i do he doesnt have to consider me family and nieghther do you. but j(you know the ass of the fam). is my bother and any thing that was made by him. i do consider my family.blood has nothing to do with the love you have for your family.i would think, you of all the people i know, would know.. that blood does not matter. and they are my family. im sorry. (in general) its not like this case is going to go very far anyway. everyone was drunk and noone even remebers what happen, everyones story is different. and whats childish is that we talk about over the net instead of in person like we should have.enough of that i just cant wait till this sht is done with and we can all get on with our lives like adults.

I remember when Gregg was shot. I heard a news report saying an officer had entered an apartment, yada, firing too soon. I happened to know a lot of the officers at that time. My immediate response out loud was,"The only one I know that would act that hastily is Phillips." Next day or so, they said it was he. Sigh.

beatrice (Anonymous) says: "Sigmund, do you really think it would have been a happier ending if the 20 year old attacker had been killed, rather than just arrested?"

Where did I mention killing the attacker? Perhaps the attacker, realizing he had brought a bottle to a gun fight, would have not attacked at all. But if he had continued, yes I believe it would be better if he were shot as opposed to another innocent unarmed victim being physically battered by yet another criminally violent or clinically insane person. You can arrest him at the hospital if he survives.

Both of those endings are happier in that there are no innocent victims

What, no more racist drunken Indian comments? Just for history's sake go back to the 1990's and see how bad the situation was.

An apology, no less!

This was the atmosphere in the police department when Bordman showed up at the door of the Sevier's, asked no questions, shouted the lone man out of his bedroom, had a gun pointed at Gregg when Phillips arrived. Gregg(.24 alcohol lever-stupor) stumbled, Bordman panicked, both officers fired fatal shots, then the cover up started.

When Bordman arrived he saw two indians standing outside. Without even a word exchanged Bordman called in an emergency where the all radio transmissions were held. Bordman determined there was an emergency due to the visual observation that Mr and Mrs Sevier were Indians!!

Olin had his officers so screwed up because of Indian prejudice due to four unanswered killings of natives that they wrote he and Mulvenon wrote that article for all their fellow LE in Kansas.

Yes, the south Lawrence traffic way was i the earlier stages of planning at this time.

0

smitty 6 years, 2 months ago

This is one of the reasons they walk on egg shells:

One example was a Wall Street Journal article, which raised the question of whether a serial killer was responsible for the recent deaths of several Native American men. Mulvenon said the only "serial" in the cases was "cereal malt beverage."

Olin co-authored that article with Mulvenon.

In his statement, Olin said he has "personal sympathy for the victims, the grieving parents, friends and the community" and acknowledges that "serious mistakes have been made in dealing with members of the Native American community."

Didn't a truckload of students from Haskell flip over in North Lawrence about 10 years ago or so and 3-5 of them died? I remember it was early morning and all involved were drunk. I could have sworn a keg was in the back of the truck too.

I can't figure out why the man was arrested. It seems he was acting in self defense. Then they came back 3 hours later for revenge. I bet if he had a gun, those women wouldn't have barged in. Jealousy is the only thing I can think of why this all happen. Heck oa reason for wanting to kill someone. As for not making glass bottles. There's always other weapons to use. I just wish people could just get along.

0

johnwoods 6 years, 2 months ago

I think glass bottles should not be made or we should license their use, requiring a training course and carrying permit.

0

beatrice 6 years, 2 months ago

Marion, I doubt that seriously. There is always more paperwork when someone is killed. Not that an attacker with a potentially lethal weapon wouldn't deserve to be "smoked," mind you. I just think it is a better ending that nobody involved was killed, and I think it silly when someone tries to argue that an attacker armed with a bottle is just as dangerous as an attacker armed with a gun.

0

Godfather94 6 years, 2 months ago

Here in the recent past, there always seems to be an out of towner involved. Of course, having KU in town there would be alot of out of towners. Maybe they need to have apartment complexes for out of towners only. This way, they can beat each others brains out,(with what liitle brains they do have) and the residents that are from Lawrence can live in peace. Maybe this is the solution.

0

Marion Lynn 6 years, 2 months ago

Well, Bea, if the "20 year old attacker" who was in point of fact, wielding a deadly weapon had been smoked, there would be a lot less paperwork!

0

Another area of town poorly lit. Check it out at night. Corliss needs to have his job reassigned where he spends certain hours of the night looking around town and making notes. No one in their right mind would live on 24th st behind Hobby Lobby, It is dark, the buildings are crappy and where does the city enforce the blight code? Street lights firs. Turn them toward the buildings. Who are the owners of the property in question?

Let's just face it Lawrence,we can't blame Topeka and Kansas City, for everything that happens in this town. It's time we start looking in are own backyard, instead of blaming everybody else for are problems.I think Lawrence is a racist town,we love blacks "yes blacks screw your PC crap"too play football and basketball at KU,but people in this town don't really care about them at all.The Last Call is gone,so now you gotta blame the Native Americans? White people start bar fights and cause trouble too,but since their white nothing is ever said about it, and people don't make such a big deal. "Double Standard Lawrence At It's Finest"

0

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 6 years, 2 months ago

The LJW reports what they know about suspects; they don't go out of their way to identify their race. For example, I didn't know that the shooter at the Last Call was African American until they gave a physical description during in the time of the manhunt. Any hispanic person being linked to a crime usually has a name that links him/her to their ethnicity. in this incident you assume that these people are from Haskell, because they come from Oklahoma. It probably is a logical assumption, but I'll bet KU has a few students from Oklahoma too. Not everyone from Oklahoma are Native Americans. There are also at times, temporary workers in Lawrence who come from all over the country. Although you have a good chance of being correct about your assumptions, there is still room for doubt. And it really doesn't matter to me what their race, religion or sexual preference is. I'm concerned that violence seems to be the answer for everything nowadays.

Both of you are sort of wrong... Hampton Court Apartments have been full of trouble for a long time. Case and point, when i lived out there several years ago. I have my car broken into not once but twice and my apartment stripped of all things worth taking. All 3 times the videos showed nothing and only one person was convicted of the first car break in. (Needless to say he was a moron who lived across the hall from me at the time) I cant even recall the number of times the cops were called for fights in the buildings, parking lots and on 24th St at all times of the night. Mi-Spec would drive through the parking lot on occasion but that did little to stop the crap that went on out there....

As for the removal of the blood from the walls: Why? it would go well with the other stuff including but not limited to feces and urine that was often there.

I would like to add that there were and still some good folks that live there because its cheep and kinda decent as far as apartments go but the complex as a whole leaves a lot to be desired.

0

kubacker 6 years, 2 months ago

kansasredlegs

You are 100% correct!

The City fathers (C of C) and the LJW are so scared the Haskell indians will raise hell about the SLT (they will anyway) that they operate under standing orders to avoid any public association of criminal activity or wrongdoing with members of the indian community.

Like I said earlier Lawrence is consumed by political correctness. Exhibit A = letting Last Call continue in business and endanger everyone in Lawrence for years (with $300K condos across the street) because a crackdown might piss off the black community.

The the same day Hack finally says LC has to go the LJW runs to the local NAACP to double make sure its OK with them, and the NAACP say it looks OK but they'll be keeping an eye on the situation - complete BS!
