Suspect in kidnapping, robbery arrested in Missouri

A man sought in the kidnapping and robbery of a Lawrence woman was arrested Wednesday night in Kansas City, Mo., after a high-speed car chase.

Donald B. Bartsma, 40, Wichita, is being held in the Clay County (Mo.) Jail after he allegedly stole a sport utility vehicle while attempting to kidnap another woman. Police say Bartsma led them on a car chase before he was arrested.

Earlier in Lawrence, a man armed with a knife approached a woman in a parking lot in the 3400 block of Iowa Street. Lawrence police say Bartsma is a suspect in that incident.

The Lawrence woman said the man forced her into her car and drove her to a bank where she withdrew money. The suspect then drove south of Lawrence to near Wells Overlook Park, where he got out of the car and fled.

Lawrence police and the Douglas County District Attorney’s office late Thursday were preparing an arrest warrant for Bartsma. Meanwhile, Bartsma is being held in Clay County on charges of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, resisting arrest and fleeing to elude an officer. His bond is $100,000.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Kansas City police were sent to a store parking lot in Clay County to investigate a report of an armed robbery and carjacking. A court document gave the following account:

A woman told officers she was returning to her Isuzu Trooper when a man approached her and asked for directions. The man pushed the woman to the passenger side of the vehicle and put a knife to her throat, telling her he was going to take her to an ATM so she could withdraw money.

While the man was trying to find the woman’s ignition keys in the backseat she jumped out of the SUV and ran for help. The suspect drove away.

Minutes later police saw the SUV on Shoal Creek Parkway and Missouri Highway 152 as it made a U-turn through a red light and drove over the concrete median and headed west on Missouri Highway 152. Police pursued the vehicle. The SUV passed other vehicles in a careless manner and was driven toward oncoming traffic. The SUV was stopped after its tires were deflated by spike sticks.

Police found a pocket knife in the suspect’s coat pocket.

According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, Bartsma was released from state prison Dec. 23 after serving a burglary sentence in Bourbon County.
