Woman reports being robbed, kidnapped
Lawrence Police responded Wednesday afternoon to a woman’s report of an armed robbery and kidnapping.
A Lawrence woman called police to report she had been approached by a man about 1:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Kohl’s, 3234 Iowa. Police said the woman told them the man displayed a knife and forced her into her car. The suspect reportedly drove her to a bank at 27th and Iowa streets and forced her to withdraw money and give him an undisclosed amount of cash. The woman told police the suspect then drove south on Iowa to County Road 458 and got out of the vehicle between Wells Overlook and U.S. Highway 59. The victim said the man fled on foot.
Police said the victim told them she then drove away and contacted a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.
The victim was unharmed. The woman told police the suspect was a white man, about 6-foot-3, weighing 215 to 240 pounds. She said he had dark hair and was wearing a flannel shirtlike coat.
After the woman contacted authorities, law enforcement officers scoured the area near Wells Overlook park.
Police are asking anyone who might have been traveling or parked along County Road 458 between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday to call 832-7509. Police said they also would like to talk with the driver of a red Toyota with tape over one headlight that was in the vicinity of the incident.
