Coroner to testify in murder trial
Prosecutors are expected to call Douglas County Coroner Erik Mitchell as their final initial witness this morning as the first-degree murder trial of Lafayette Cosby continues.
Douglas County prosecutors accuse Cosby, 28, of shooting and killing 28-year-old Robert T. Martin during a late-night party April 4, 2004, at Jefferson Commons, 2511 W. 31st St.
This is Cosby’s second trial on this charge after the Kansas Supreme Court late last year overturned a November 2004 conviction when a majority of justices ruled that errors were made by District Judge Jack Murphy and the Douglas County District Attorney’s office at the time.
On Thursday afternoon, prosecutors and defense attorney Greg Robinson questioned Lawrence police detectives who worked the crime scene. Murphy told jurors that the two sides hope to finish presenting evidence today. Mitchell is scheduled to take the stand at 8:30 a.m.
